Missions

Open Air Ministry
UBC works in conjunction with the YMCA and other local churches to minister to the homeless.  Meeting at the corner of 17th Street and Florida Blvd, our church leads the services on the 3rd Sunday of each month.  Sunday School/Bible Study begins at 11:00 followed by the worship service at noon. This ministry is primarily to the spiritual need of the homeless in our community, but we also provide weekly gifts of basic items - toiletries and clothing - to help meet some of the physical needs as well. The ministry has grown over the last several years and now reaches over 100 people weekly.  This is a lay led ministry and seek volunteers who are willing to share themselves through music, bible study leadership, prayer, fellowship, or by providing food and drinks occasionally.

Kairos (Prison Ministry)
Regular visits to the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women make for a dynamic opportunity to love people who desperately need to know someone cares for them. Planned retreats for spiritual growth and other visits during the year contribute to a challenging, but wonderful, ministry to the community around us.

Sharlo Apartment Ministry
Being the presence of Christ to those who suffer from poverty and other physical limitations. Each Sunday, we minister to the needs of people who desire the demonstration of love, hospitality, Bible study and worship.

Church of the Nations
Church of the Nations is a ministry which focuses on international students and their families.  A sample of activities include English Conversation on Friday nights, Bible study and worship on Sunday mornings, free lunch after worship the first Sunday of each month, periodic field trips and retreats, special events such as our annual Welcome (Back) Picnic - but most of all befriending and loving internationals.  Our goal is to minister to their needs and expose them to the Christian faith in a way that respects their own culture and religious background.  <more>

Women's Missionary Union (WMU)
The WMU at UBC has a great tradition of helping church members grow in awareness of both the scope of our world-wide mission program and the need for prayer and financial support of our missionaries.  It continues to provide a multi-faceded approach to equip us.  Currently there are three round table groups which meet regularly to further these goals; Jackie Lord Kirkpatric Group, Kittie Colvin Trail Group, and the Missionary Round Table Group.

The WMU has responsibility for providing support for the following mission offerings:

   * SBC International Missions (Lottie Moon Christmas Offering)
   * SBC North American Missions (Annie Armstrong Easter Offering)
   * State Missions (Georgia Barnett Offering in Louisiana)
   * SBC World Hunger Offering
   * CBF Global Missions

Missionary Connections
A special blessing to the church family is our history of "sending our own" to fields of service through the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's Global Mission Partners. Currently at least five families and individuals with ties to UBC are serving internationally:

   - Keith and Mary Holmes  to the Romany People Group through CBF
   - Kyle and Jackie Kirkpatrick to Macedonia through SBC
   - Vance and Cherry Kirkpatrick to Kenya through SBC
   - Randy and Kittie Trail to Mauritius through SBC
   - Mike and Sharon Wright to Taiwan through SBC
   - Ted and Beverly Holmes to Poland through SBC

Mission Giving
The yearly budget of UBC designates that 10% of budgeted funds will be used for cooperative
mission programs.  For many years, UBC has allowed each person contributing to the budget to
choose among several options which determine how that 10% portion of his/her contribution to
the budget will be directed.  A card is provided to inform the church financial secretary of your
choice, which can be changed at any time.  If no choice is made, option 3, Missions Only will be
used.  The following table shows the current options for a $10.00 donation to the mission portion
of the budget.

Missions Support Ministry

Several Ministry Teams work to support the mission of the church.  These include:

Transportation - provides transportation to and from church to neighboring retirement communities and to special functions away from UBC.

Communications - handles special projects such as mail-outs for special events and for general advertisement of UBC in printed materials.

Fellowship - organizes, decorates and serves for church wide fellowships such as Family Day and recognition banquets.

Bereavement - reaches out to the family affected by the death of a loved one by, for example, serving a meal before or after a funeral.

Website - develops and maintains the UBC website.

Prayer - gives special attention to those whose personal needs call out for intercessory prayer. Prayer is central to how we show love for one another.
