Church-Wide Mission Involvement

UBC has the privilege of assisting with missions in other ways. We share in local benevolence projects with other churches and independently as needs are brought to our attention, and we maintain a "Benevolence Fund" for this purpose. We also cooperate with the Baton Rouge Federation of Churches and Synagogues in addressing needs like housing, hunger, and racial problems. We provide space to help various social agencies meet needs. A partial list of projects and groups follows.

  • Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank
  • Habitat for Humanity/Helpers for Housing
  • Narcotics Anonymous
  • Alcoholics Anonymous/Al-Anon
  • AARP Safe Driving School

A special blessing to the church family is our history of "sending our own" to fields of service through the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's Global Mission Partners. Currently at least five families and individuals with ties to UBC are serving internationally:

  -  Keith and Mary Holmes Romany People Group CBF
  -  Kyle and Jackie Kirkpatrick Macedonia SBC
  -  Vance and Cherry Kirkpatrick Kenya SBC
  -  Randy and Kitty Trail Mauritius SBC
  -  Mike and Sharon Wright Taiwan SBC

We also have a great heritage of Journeymen, US-2er's, summer missionaries and former missionaries who have served all around the world and who have been a part of UBC. We are grateful for this wonderful tradition.

Women's Missionary Union (WMU)

UBC has enjoyed a wonderful tradition of involvement with the WMU, and in recent years the group has grown in numbers of units, numbers of people involved, and in the number and kinds of projects undertaken. Charged with the task of helping church members grow in awareness of both the scope of our world-wide mission program and the need for prayer and financial support of our missionaries, the group continues to provide a multi-faceded approach to equip us.

Mission Groups

  • Mission Friends for 3 Year Olds
  • Mission Friends for 4-5 Year Olds
  • Girls in Action for Grades 1-6
(Royal Ambassadors for Grades 1-6 is not a WMU group, but serves the same ends)
  • Mission Possible for Youth
(Acteen emphases for both girls and boys during a multiple discipline setting)
  • Jackie Lord Kirkpatrick Group
  • Kittie Colvin Trail Group
  • Missionary Round Table Group
  • Dorcas Group
  • Joy Mission Group (for Young Women)

Mission Support

The WMU has responsibility for providing support for the Weeks of Prayer for three traditional Southern Baptist Mission emphases, and for one additional offering.

  • International Missions (Lottie Moon Christmas Offering)*
  • North American Missions (Annie Armstrong Easter Offering)
  • State Missions (Georgia Barnett Offering in Louisiana)
  • World Hunger Offering

*The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Global Mission Offering has also been adopted by the WMU, and has become a part of the Christmas emphasis.

The church has usually set aside time in morning worship and on Wednesday evening for each of these programs, and in cooperation with the staff, the WMU has enlisted guest speakers to help the church family become more intimately acquainted with the breadth of the needs these cooperative ventures meet.
