Off-Limits Theology Conversations Starting in January of 2019

Updated: Dec 26, 2018

Have you ever been told that you can’t ask that question? Did you respond with, “Well, why?”

More often than not, many have been told that you can’t ask that or you can’t think that. According to a recent Pew Research Study, this has resulted in 4 out of 10 people stating that there is a disconnect between them and their faith community.

More often than not, many Christ followers have allowed our theological assumptions to be shaped by the professional theologians, pastors, and academics. Yet what if our theology is not intended to be a spoon-fed matter, but a deeply contemplated, processed, and conversational formation?

As theologian Paul Tillich put it, “Being human means asking the questions of one's own being and living under the impact of the answers given to this question. And, conversely, being human means receiving answers to the questions of one's own being and asking questions under the impact of the answers.”

A complex God demands that we ask complex questions about God, God’s world, God’s word. We were created by a God, a very complex and often indiscernible God, who gives us freedom to deconstruct and reconstruct our theology.

God is secure enough for us to ask really hard questions, to strip away at the layers of theology, and get down to the root of all this.

This winter, we are creating a safe space to ask those really difficult questions, simply listen, process, converse, and step away with more questions.

By calling this a safe space, these gatherings will allow people to ask those “off-limits” questions and wrestle with the answers or more questions that proceed, without a sense of judgment from other participants.

All are invited who are willing to come with an open mind, think critically, and allow grace to fill our limited constructs of an unlimited God.

But what are the questions that need to be asked?

Take a few minutes to contribute the "off-limits" theological questions you would like to discuss based on the provided topics below, as well as adding topical questions not provided. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NKX3L63

Off-Limits Theology Conversations will take place on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 6:00 PM in Fellowship Hall. For the month of January, the gatherings will take place on January 9 and 23 (second and fourth Wednesday).

We want to remove the hurdle of dinner and/or childcare for all participants. Therefore, come hungry and know we will have childcare and dinner.
